How Does Hypnotherapy Work?
It is not known exactly how hypnotherapy works but it can have amazing results! There are several discussions about how it works. One is that it is an altered state of consciousness, for example just like before you go to sleep. Another is that hypnotherapy is a way of focussing the mind and it usually involves relaxation and visualisation which the therapist will guide you through.
What Will Happen During My Session?
I will welcome you into my calm and peaceful office and invite you to sit in the relaxing chair. We will spend time talking together so we are both clear about what you want to achieve from hypnotherapy and agree how to proceed. I also use this time to get to know you, this is important because your suggestion work in hypnosis is bespoke to you, it is not a script from a book.
You will be gently relaxed into a state of hypnosis and the suggestions discussed delivered to the subconscious mind before reorientation. You are in complete control at all times. If you need to cough you can cough, if you need the toilet you would be able to re-orientate and go, you are still in control.
How Safe is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is thought to be safe when practised by trained, qualified hypnotherapy practitioners. The British Medical Association has endorsed hypnotherapy since the 1950s. However, not all hypnotherapists are trained to the same standards. The UK doesn’t have legislation to control hypnotherapists, therefore it is important to check out any therapist you choose. I am fully qualified and registered with the National Hypnotherapy Society which is recognised by the Professional Standards Authority. To maintain this I have to follow their ethical code of conduct, be qualified, insured and complete 30hours of professional development each year as well as have professional supervision.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Sometimes people may release their emotions following hypnotherapy as it can recall a past memory when in hypnosis which may not be accurate. Clients usually find the release of these emotions positive. The relaxation hypnosis creates often leads to feedback of a good sleep on the day of the session.
Can Anyone Be Hypnotised?
Hypnotherapy is not suitable for very young children due to the need to sit still and quiet. It is not suitable for anyone who is unable to sit, listen and understand, for example as though having a story read to them. I would not use hypnotherapy on a client with severe mental illness and would need the consent of a client’s doctor if the client had epilepsy. I do not treat people under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. I also do not treat ladies in the first trimester of pregnancy so please tell me if you think you might be pregnant.
Are you Worried Hypnosis Isn’t Safe or You Will Lose Control?
If you are worried hypnotherapy isn’t safe for you and you will lose control it is possibly because of shows you have been to or acts on TV. It is important to know I do not do stage hypnosis.
You will be in control, I cannot (and would not) make you do anything against your moral or ethical judgement. We will be working in partnership to achieve the best outcome for you using hypnosis.
Do I need to be referred by my Doctor?
Clients come to me for hypnotherapy via different referral methods. With an increasingly pressured NHS Drs may recommend alternative therapy for their patients. However, referrals are also via recommendation or clients seeking a new way to solve their problem.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Your therapy is individual, personally tailored to you and your requirements. I do not use a generic hypnotherapy script for you at Locks Heath Hypnotherapy. The number of sessions required will depend on what we are working on and your commitment to the therapy. During the initial consultation I will be able to give an approximate guide how many sessions may be required.
Stop smoking is the initial telephone consultation and one longer session. At the end of each session we will take the time to discuss your progress and the direction you want to take and you will never be asked to commit to sessions you do not need.
How Long is a Session?
Sessions are 90minutes. You are not in a state of hypnosis for all of this time as this allows time to review progress from the previous session and for you to re-orientate before leaving.
What Is The Success Rate of Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy has a high success rate but as with any therapy there are no guarantees. The key to success is YOU and your commitment to the therapy but I will be there to help you along the way.
