Hello, my name is Caroline
After many years in the public sector as police support staff with the stresses and strains work places on us all I also had to suddenly balance elder care as well. I am part of Generation X, the “Sandwich Generation” balancing elder care and child care. For several years I had wanted to study counselling and decided that as I needed more flexibility I made that break and lived in my camper van for six weeks. When I returned I was a student! It was a mix of exciting and scary being more than twenty years since the last time I studied but it has lead me to hypnotherapy which I have discovered a real passion for.
What Is Hypnotherapy?
I often get asked what is hypnotherapy. Will it hurt? How does it work? Will you make me do something I don’t want to?
Hypnotherapy uses the power of the subconscious mind. It is a safe and effective tool for giving us access to the sub-conscious part of our mind and it is in the sub-conscious where our emotions, memories, beliefs, habits and automatic responses (i.e. fight, flight or freeze) are stored. It does not hurt as it is deeply relaxing and clients often report they have a good sleep on the day of hypnotherapy and you are in control at all times, therefore cannot be made to do something you do not want to.
Hypnotherapy is a talking therapy, a good reason for choosing a therapist who also has counselling skills. Hypnotherapy works by guiding the client into a light trance through relaxation.
It is a state of altered awareness or consciousness that we enter daily when our brainwave activity slows to a different frequency, for example when falling asleep and waking up again.

How Does Hypnotherapy Work?
It is not known exactly how hypnotherapy works but it can have amazing results! There are several discussions about how it works. One is that it is an altered state of consciousness, for example just like before you go to sleep. Another is that hypnotherapy is a way of focusing the mind and it usually involves relaxation and visualisation which the therapist will guide you through.
How Safe is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is thought to be safe when practised by trained, qualified hypnotherapy practitioners. The British Medical Association has endorsed hypnotherapy since the 1950s. However, not all hypnotherapists are trained to the same standards. The UK doesn’t have legislation to control hypnotherapists, therefore it is important to check out any therapist you choose. I am fully qualified and registered with the National Hypnotherapy Society which is recognised by the Professional Standards Authority. To maintain this I have to follow their ethical code of conduct, be qualified, insured and complete 30hours of professional development each year as well as have professional supervision.
Can Anyone Be Hypnotised?
Hypnotherapy is not suitable for very young children due to the need to sit still and quiet. It is not suitable for anyone who is unable to sit, listen and understand, for example as though having a story read to them. I would not use hypnotherapy on a client with severe mental illness and would need the consent of a client’s doctor if the client had epilepsy. I do not treat people under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs. I also do not treat ladies in the first trimester of pregnancy so please tell me if you think you might be pregnant.
